Studies show that people who volunteer live longer. And why not volunteer with an organization where you can learn how to have a healthier lifestyle? Island Heart To Heart has endured for over 30 years because of our many volunteers. All our volunteers have attended our classes. At any time we have about 20 volunteers in several roles.
These volunteers visit patients at Royal Jubilee Hospital on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon. We tell patients about our program and collect their name, phone number and email address in order that our Coordinator can contact them later to fill our classes. Volunteers are required to do two, three hour shifts a month in a regular rotation. Full training is provided. These positions appeal to people who feel comfortable conversing with people they do not know.
We are registered as a non-profit society and have regular 90 minute meetings 4 times per year. We use standard rules of order to oversee the running of the program. So if you have experience with efficiently run meetings, this may be for you.
We try to have each of our classes run as efficiently as possible so all participants get the maximum benefit. Our facilitators work as a pair and usually do 2 sets of classes per year. That requires a commitment for one night a week for seven consecutive weeks. Facilitating experience is an asset.
